Armadillo

Meaning & Symbolism

The Armadillo, with its instinct to curl into a protective ball when threatened, symbolizes feeling ashamed or embarrassed, illustrating how we often want to withdraw and shield ourselves when feeling vulnerable. This behavior reflects our tendency to hide our true selves and emotions to avoid judgment or ridicule. When feelings of shame take over, it’s hard to view ourselves and others accurately or honestly. It can bring up behaviors of denial, dismissiveness, or gaslighting. Shame can cause us to assume something is fundamentally wrong with us or others instead of seeing things from a clearer perspective.

By understanding the Armadillo’s symbolism, we can learn to address and overcome these feelings. Instead of retreating and becoming guarded, we can practice self-compassion and open communication to confront and diffuse shame and embarrassment. For example, sharing our experiences and emotions with trusted friends or therapists can help us gain perspective and reduce the power these feelings hold over us. Additionally, embracing our supposed “imperfections” and viewing them as opportunities can foster resilience and self-acceptance.

Shift feelings of shame or embarrassment towards dignity (Lion) by considering meeting the following needs: self-expression, belonging, equality, humor, honesty, acceptance, self-trust, safety, being seen/heard, respect, understanding
