Pelican
Meaning & Symbolism
The Pelican, known for its unique behavior of dipping its large beak into the water to scoop up fish, symbolizes the need for honesty in our lives. Just as the Pelican dives beneath the surface to find sustenance, being deeply honest with ourselves and others requires us to confront the often uncomfortable truths hidden beneath the surface of our daily interactions. This bird’s ability to carry more than it can consume in its beak serves as a reminder that honesty is about balancing what we hold within and what we express outwardly. Timing, kindness, and discretion are crucial when sharing our truths, ensuring that our honesty builds rather than breaks connections.
It’s important to note that radical honesty is not the same as brutal honesty. While radical honesty involves being truthful and transparent, it also requires us to consider the impact of our words and to deliver them with empathy and care. Brutal honesty, on the other hand, often disregards the feelings of others and can cause harm rather than foster understanding. For example, when we approach difficult conversations with empathy and clarity, we create a space where both parties feel respected and understood. By being specific and clear about our feelings and needs, we maintain integrity and challenge any limiting beliefs that need to be dissolved. By being fully honest, we not only foster our own growth but also respect others’ right to informed consent. Accepting others’ honesty without judgment not only nurtures a safe environment for vulnerability but also allows for deep healing and genuine connection.

- How do you truly feel about your current situation, and what do you genuinely want?
- Can you be sure that what you believe is true? Why do you believe it? Where do you think that idea came from?
- How might your relationships improve if you practiced radical honesty with empathy and care?
